..arrived safely in a heavily padded Gigbag that appears to be waterproofed. Heavy duty materials, big zippers, padded handles and shoulder straps. The little amp they give you sells for $30 online and was also a surprise. I assumed it would be a throwaway/giveaway.. nope. This little thing has full low end, it’s loud, richer than you expect. It has a headphone Jack too.
. I never saw a guitar in this price range w perfect fret ends, but this was much better than usual. The whole guitar feels so nice,the satin finish feels high tech and expensive. It’s a quick feeling neck too. Humbucker is high gain and it does djent or chug, the single coils sound like a Strat, it has some of that out of phase quack you want.
Winzz sells a black pickguard if you want to change it. It’s only $10! I chose magenta over black, it looks so punk! With my furry leopard guitars strap, it’s very cool. The colors aren’t for everyone, but they do make a solid black too.
I thought the black and hot pink looked really wild, it’s WAY nicer in person, trust me. The photos look drab and even a little like a toy, but in person it looks sleek, high tech and the satin black contrasts so nicely against that crazy pickguard.
They have a good modern C neck, the knobs and switches are smooth, the tuners seem to hold a tuning ok. You will need to stretch the strings at first, like any guitar, the HPL fingerboard arrived slightly dry, and almost charcoal greyish. After I oiled it up using Johnson’s Feed & Wax, (an orange oil/beeswax blend) the board looked black, farm and almost like Ebony.
At the end of the day, it stays in tune, it sounds like a Strat, no major issues.. the humbucker is pretty strong, and although many folks will modify these, the pickups are not throwaways, they’re appropriate for a starter player.
I love the gigbag and little amp, and the punky new wave 80’s colors kind of make this guitar unique and awesome. Not sure if I got lucky, but one turn of the truss rod, oiled up the board and I was playing SRV licks and Sultans of Swing in a few minutes.
